Gazebo
A gazebo is a free standing structure or one attached to a garden wall, roofed and open on all sides, providing those using it for shade, shelter and rest a good view.
Love is in the Air
Enhancing the beauty of the centre field is a water fountain, an essential element of an Italian garden. The trickling of water serves to create a sense of peace and serenity.
Secret Garden
Many Italian gardens contain a secret garden, a walled garden, hidden from plain sight, its pretty paths quiet and secluded.
Juliet’s Balcony
The house, a former inn, is now known as the Casa di Giulietta (Juliet’s House) where Juliet from Romeo and Juliet is said to have lived. Despite being purely fictional, each year, thousands of people flock to it and cover the walls beneath the balcony with love notes in the hope of being with their true love forever.
Roses
The rose is the most popular flower in the world. Symbolising love and passion, it is also commonly used to represent beauty, politics and war.
There are over 150 species of roses and thousands of hybrids. There is no definitive way to categorise roses but they are usually divided into groups according to their history and parentage.
Found primarily in the temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, most species of roses are native to Asia and Oceania, with a smaller group found in North America, Europe and northwest Africa.
Types of Roses
Climbing Roses
Also referred to as “rambling” roses, climbing roses have sturdy and upright (sometimes arching) canes, which can be trained when provided support. These canes can grow up to 4.5 metres, reaching great heights along a trellis wall, garden fence and arbours and pergolas. In general, climbing roses tend to produce more flowers when grown horizontally rather than vertically.
Hybrid Tea Rose
Hybrid tea roses are one of the most popular classes of roses with their bountiful, ornate blooms that sprout from long stems and reach anywhere from 30 to 50 petals. They create a dazzling display in any garden, and horticulturists have bred thousands of hybrid varieties.
Floribunda Roses
Floribunda roses are another favourite rose class. They offer a bouquet on every branch as they appear in clusters rather than a single flower per stem. A cross between polyantha species roses and hybrid teas, they combine hardiness, free flowering, and showy, usually fragrant blooms.
Miniature Roses
Perfectly scaled, smaller versions of larger roses, miniature roses have all the colours, forms, substance and often, fragrance of full-sized roses. They can reach between 15 and 120 centimetres in height, and have a bushy, compact, climbing or cascading shape. Miniature roses are just as attractive as their larger counterparts, and in most cases, easier to grow.
Italian Countryside
Be transported to the south of Italy when you stroll along the boardwalk in the flower field. Get a taste of regions rich with farms and vineyards and where much wine is produced as you take in the wine barrels and the farmhouse in the valley.
